He’s not just fucking with Jonathan, it’s also insidious that Dracula is framing him because it’s another method of isolation; The villagers are likely to believe Jonathan has been turned into a vampire and is hunting their babies on Dracula’s behalf, so they fear and hate him. It’s one thing for Jonathan to think the locals won’t help, but now it works both ways, so even if he did try anyway it wouldn’t work.
